POOR GRIP STRENGTH

DIFFICULTY IN CLIMBING UP AND DOWN STAIRS

By Older Adults with Poor Grip Strength

MOBILITY PROBLEMS
Difficulty in Climbing Up or Down Stairs by Older Adults with Poor Grip Strength.

POOR GRIP STRENGTH

Poor grip strength is due to weak hand muscle strength with poor gripping power and an insufficient energy force applied by the hand to squeeze, pull on, hold onto or hang onto objects. Poor grip strength is due to weak hand muscle strength with poor gripping power and an insufficient energy force applied by the hand to squeeze, pull on, hold onto or hang onto objects.

Conversely, strong grip strength is important for tasks such as climbing stairs. Sufficient grip strength is important for holding onto stair rails with a firm grip, clutching the stair rail or rails to maintain balance and prevent a fall on the stairs.

Other factors that an individual might distinguish as the cause of their stair climbing difficulty may be unsteadiness, a fear of falling, hypertension or arthritis. Difficulty climbing down stairs is associated with a higher prevalence of falls. Accidents occur about 3 times more frequently while climbing down stairs than up stairs. Difficulty climbing up stairs is also associated with poor balance, reduced grip strength and neurologic gait abnormalities.

Stair architecture and lighting may have an effect on stair negotiation in older adults. Other issues may include vision, hand pain, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal factors, joint disease, cognition, and neurologic diseases.

Stair climbing difficulty may be attributed to visual impairment, difficulty in depth perception, contrast sensitivity, or dim or low-light ambient vision, which are important visual components of stair negotiation in older adults.

A stair lift may be a practical solution for those individuals who have difficulty navigating or climbing stairs, due to poor grip strength.
